Treating a rotten fork naturally

A frog that remained wet despite healthy feet
During the CSIO of La Baule, a rider agreed to use our products to share her experience: although her mare had good hoof quality, her frogs remained constantly too wet, with horn that was sometimes brittle. She had already tried several products available on the market, often effective in the short term, but never managed to stabilize the condition of the frogs in the long term. As soon as she stopped the treatment, the frog would become soft, foul-smelling, and sensitive again.
A test with OZONE INTENSIVE CARE: first results from day 2
After our discussion at stand 067, this rider tested our saturated ozonated oil OZONE INTENSIVE CARE, applying it for 3 consecutive days. The change was rapid:
- From day 2, a clear improvement was visible
- By day 3, the frog had regained a healthy appearance and a firm texture
She then decided to space out the applications (every 3 days), then only one application the following week. Despite the spacing, the effect was maintained. Unlike other products that only temporarily dried out the frog, OZONE INTENSIVE CARE genuinely cleaned the frog in depth.
Precise and economical application
Thanks to its fine tip, the oil can be applied to the deep areas of the frog, not just on the surface. Its oily texture ensures good adherence without dripping, even on a wet area. Little product is needed for each application, making the 100 ml format particularly economical:
“I used very little product, and I still have three-quarters left.”
Why OZONE INTENSIVE CARE instead of OZONE HOOF CARE?
In most cases of thrush, we recommend the use of OZONE HOOF CARE, specifically formulated for regular hoof maintenance and cleaning of cavities thanks to its fine tip.
But here, the situation was particular: this rider was facing frequent and persistent recurrences, despite regular treatments. The frog remained soft, foul-smelling, and could not return to a stable state.
This is why we preferred to recommend an initial phase with OZONE INTENSIVE CARE, our most concentrated ozone formula, usually used as a first-line treatment for wounds or deep infections. It allows for more intense and rapid sanitation, especially when pathogenic flora is well established.
This choice proved relevant: in just a few days, the results were visible and lasting.
What is thrush?
Thrush is a common bacterial infection that affects the central part of the horse's hoof, called the frog. This condition is characterized by a distinctive foul odor, blackish and soft tissue, and can cause significant discomfort or even lameness if not treated promptly.
Causes of thrush
Several factors can promote the onset of this infection:
- Excessive moisture: A poorly maintained stall, soiled bedding, or wet weather conditions create an environment conducive to bacterial growth
- Lack of hygiene: Insufficient hoof picking allows for the accumulation of debris and manure
- Poor conformation: Atrophied frogs or poorly trimmed hooves do not allow sufficient contact with the ground
- Lack of exercise: Immobility reduces blood circulation in the foot and prevents the hoof's natural self-cleaning
Complete treatment protocol
Step 1: Deep cleaning
Start by carefully picking the hoof, removing all debris, manure, and necrotic tissue. Use a stiff brush to clean the frog and lateral sulci. If necessary, call your farrier to trim the affected areas and expose healthy tissue.
Step 2: Intensive treatment with OZONE INTENSIVE CARE
For severe cases or persistent recurrences, OZONE INTENSIVE CARE is your main ally. This powerful product acts deeply to eliminate the bacteria responsible for the infection. Apply it generously to the entire affected area after cleaning, making sure it penetrates well into the sulci and fissures of the frog. Continue for 3 consecutive days, then space out applications according to progress.
Step 3: Regular maintenance with OZONE HOOF CARE
Once the infection is under control, continue treatment with OZONE HOOF CARE to promote the regeneration of healthy tissues and maintain hoof balance. This care helps strengthen the horn and prevent recurrences. Ideal for regular hoof maintenance.
Step 4: Daily prevention with OZONE FROG CARE
For daily preventive care, OZONE FROG CARE is ideal. This specially formulated product maintains frog health and creates a protective barrier against bacterial aggressions. Recommended application several times a week, even on healthy hooves.
Essential complementary measures
Improve the environment
Treatment will only be effective if you improve your horse's living conditions:
- Clean stalls daily and maintain clean, dry bedding
- Ensure adequate drainage in paddocks
- Avoid prolonged muddy areas
- Change bedding regularly
Increase exercise
Movement stimulates blood circulation in the foot and promotes healing. If possible, increase turnout time in the paddock or arena.
Regular monitoring
Inspect your horse's hooves daily during and after treatment. Thrush can recur if favorable conditions persist.
When to consult a veterinarian?
Although natural treatments are often effective, some situations require professional intervention:
- Persistent or worsening lameness
- Deep infection reaching sensitive structures
- No improvement after 7 to 10 days of treatment
- Presence of pus or significant discharge
- Excessive heat or swelling of the foot
Conclusion
Thrush is a common but treatable condition naturally with the right products and rigorous hygiene. Our OZONE range offers a complete solution adapted to each situation: OZONE INTENSIVE CARE for severe cases and persistent recurrences, OZONE HOOF CARE for regular maintenance and sanitation, and OZONE FROG CARE for daily prevention. Combined with good hygiene and maintenance practices, these products will allow you to maintain healthy hooves and prevent recurrences, as evidenced by the experience of this rider at the CSIO of La Baule.
